No Community Services Opportunities for SO’s

My son was convicted in Ohio of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor and sentenced to (among other things) 160 hours of community service. When my son asked his PO for suggestions where to volunteer, his PO basically said “Good luck, no one wants an SO, you’ll have to work for the police or fire department.” Isn’t his PO supposed to give him a list of qualified community service opportunities? We have checked with the Salvation Army, and they don’t accept SO’s; I searched online for volunteer opportunities in our area and most are either working with minors (prohibited by the terms of probation) or include a background check. Any ideas?

  1. He could possibly work at a homeless shelter, but he’d probably have to work in the kitchen area and away from “customers”. He could also ask the city commissioner to see if there are any city projects that need clean up personnel. Community service is not really supposed to be like a good job. He’s probably not going to like what he’s doing, so working at the police or fire department isn’t a bad option. Even for other types of crimes, community service is usually limited to the jobs that other people don’t want to do like trash clean up or janitorial work. Maybe he could go to the nearest military base and see if he can be a grounds keeper. Cemeteries might be a good place for that too. I hope that helps.

  2. Humane society?

I tried volunteering at nursing homes for the elderly. After being rejected several times i found one that would accept me. My community service was not court ordered…i just wanted to do something to feel better about myself.

Keep trying. Your son may need to show up, in person, and do some persuading. Good luck!
