Abuse Of Power

originally posted 3/4/2012 On June 6, 2010, I was arrested for failure to register. I was homeless and failed to get to the police station within the 3 days of being made homeless. When I was arrested I did not have my shirt on, but it was brought with me to the station and laid on a bench. While being booked in, I asked if I could put it on. The Sex Offender Registration Officer told me no. I asked him why, and his response was, We don’t like Sex Offenders in our town. He then began to verbally abuse and taunt me. After several minutes of this, as we were heading out of the booking room, I reached over to pick up my shirt. The officer then attacked me and beat me severely. He slammed my head against the wall so hard that I blacked out for a second. I then found myself on the ground with his knee…

No Help Anywhere

originally posted 3/7/2012 I have been on line searching for a website to help. I have found many where people are telling their stories but it doesn’t seem like people are banding together to really accomplish getting something done about the horrid realities of the SO registry. I am at my wit’s end. My grandchildren have suffered so much that they constantly talk of suicide. And all because there were 3 pictures of children that popped up when my son was looking for other pictures to do a work flyer project that involved a child’s hearing device because he was the artist in the company. He immediately deleted them. No one could pull them up, trade them, share them or anything. But at the time the city was doing a internet SO sweep, and he was one of the unfortunate ones that the cops came knocking on his door. He was very cooperative and told them what happened. It…

No Rights; No Relief

originally posted 2/26/2012 The registry has caused our family much humiliation and grief. My husband is a RSO,who has done his time, completed all therapy, and complied with all registry requirements. It’s a joke that there is a disclaimer posted on these sites that it can’t be used for harassment. This story is based on not only my husband (the RSO) but the family. My daughter’s ex boy friend used the information from the registry to try to gain custody of the daughter they share together. He involved a television station that took video of our home and my husband, and my daughter, his step-daughter, who was the victim. We went to an attorney and were told that it’s public record and nothing can be done. This is just one of several instances where this ex boy friend has used this information only for us to be told time and time again that we can’t do anything to him because…

Public Humiliation

originally posted 2/19/2012 Though I have had other personal incidents and difficulties with having to retroactively register as a sex offender, I will relate only one of many that illustrate an unintended consequence. My wife and I, (now ex in large part because of her fear of public humiliation) my youngest step-daughter, and her friends were pulled over for going 3 miles over the speed limit. (The policeman was upset because I decided to pass him.) While at our car window, the fact that I am a registered sex offender is loudly announced on the officer’s radio. My wife, who is now mortified, gets out of the car and almost runs down the road. My daughter, stuck between her friends, is fighting to hold back tears of embarrassment as the police officer, hand on gun, follows me as I get out of the car to go after my wife in an attempt to console her. How is publicly embarrassing…

The Love of My Life in a Life Long Torture System

originally posted 2/10/2012 “

My soon to be husband is labeled as a sex offender for being in the wrong place at the wrong time with a minor who lied to save her self. We have recently moved to a new house and just started getting our lives together when we heard a loud knock on the door at 7am; it was the cops stating that he didn’t register, when In reality he did and the new address is posted online and he even had his letter of intent but the officer said that doesn’t matter he doesn’t have his plastic ID. So all I could do was sit back and watch as the put him in hand cuffs and took him to jail.
Then once he was released from jail to go and get his plastic ID he was arrested again for the same thing no ID. So he goes before the judge and the judge…

Student

originally posted 2/6/2012 My brother who is 22 just had to register as a sex offender today!! When he was 18 yrs old he was got in trouble for looking at pornographic images on the internet. He was 18 yrs old looking at pictures of girls who were 16, this was the first time they ever had a computer in their house and he honestly didn’t know that it was against the law. Now 4 years later, it is finally settled, but he has 60 months supervised probation and had to register as a sex offender, he also lost his job because of all this mess. There has to be some way to differentiate between those who actually commit sex crimes and those who are looking at pictures or other similar things. At 22 he is labeled a sex offender for the rest of his life. The day the police showed up at the house, he was not arrested…

MOTHER

originally posted 1/17/2012 My son was 20 and had sex with a 14 year that said she was 17. I have her myspace page that states she was 17. But never the less my son will be a registered offender for the rest of his life, because she lied. My heart is broke, and most of the time I don’t know what to do with myself. He is not a violent offender, but that makes no difference when you have to register. It's just so wrong! His life was just starting. Now it's over because she lied. There is a big difference between raping and molesting a child, from when the girl lied about her age and got caught by her mom. There needs to be a change and I'm gonna fight for my son!!!!

Unfair Laws

originally posted 1/13/2012 I want it clear that I know I made mistakes, and I am not excusing my responsibility in any way. I had a sexual relationship with a teenage girl in 2005, her father knew and was OK with it. She pretty much lived with me for a little over a year, with parental consent. We were not careful (did not use protection) We were scared but excited when she became pregnant. Upon reviving welfare benefits, the state required a DNA test to prove paternity. A year after this I was charged by the state for rape. Our relationship broke down, but I still see our daughter on weekends, and pay child support. [My girlfriend] was already 18 when the court preceding started. She even stood in my defense, stating it was consensual My lawyer told me with DNA I could not win, so I took a plea for 3rd degree criminal sexual conduct in 2007 (statutory rape). I was unaware it would put me on the…

Forced to Come Out and then Punished for Honesty

originally posted 12/29/2011 At age 19 my son had a relationship with a 14 year old days from her 15th birthday. In deposition she admitted freely to lying about her age, stating she was 17, but of course, this doesn’t matter. He served 1 year on probation and made a suicide attempt the day he had to register and was violated to prison for using a prescription medication as his method of attempting to take his life. After 2 years in prison, he was released and immediately returned to university, finishing the last 2 semesters with a 3.65 in political science. He also has held a good student job as a waiter at a local sports bar, a job held for him by his employer despite his incarceration. But in Nov. of this year he failed a polygraph because he did not reveal he had had sexual encounters with men, something he was not ready to discuss yet with…

Heart Broken

originally posted 12/26/2011 I recently found the person I thought I would be so compatible with in life; the problem is that he is forced to be a life time registered sex offender. I was told If I lived with him or have him around my children, I have a good chance I could lose my children, my house, and our freedom. We would always no matter where we would go be judged. My recent new found love is a life time offender because a female lied about her age; she said she was 18 and turned out to be 16. I want to know why my guy has to be a life time sex offender because a 16 year old could not be honest? This happened over 10 years ago, and he is still paying the price. I do not think it is fair to him or others like him. I am so heart broken and don’t know…
